BIOGRAPHY
Karel Appel is regarded as the most
powerful of the post-War generation of Netherlands artists. Educated at the
Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam, his first one-man exhibition was in
1946, followed by his inclusion in 1947 in the show Young Artists at the
Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. In 1948 Appel helped to found the experimental
group of Dutch and Belgian artists REFLEX, from which the famous COBRA group
sprang (Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam -- borne cities of the artists
involved). Considered among the most energetic exponents of expressive
abstraction in the world Championed kaleidoscopic color and dynamic brushwork.
His abstract images often retain suggestions of masks, animals and fantasy
figures, imbued with a delightful childlike madness that continues to surprise
and delight to this day.
