MARC CHAGALL

Marc Chagall - Artist Biography

Marc Chagall was born Moises Shagalov in 1887 in the Russian town of Vitsyebsk. The oldest of nine children in a poor Hassidic Jewish family, Chagall showed talent at a very early age. In 1907, at the age of 20, he was sent to St. Petersburg to study art and develop his skills.

After his initial training, Chagall moved to Paris in 1910. Here, he was exposed to a far greater variety of artistic styles than he had ever seen before. Paris was an art Mecca at the time, and Chagall was quickly introduced to Surrealism, Cubism and Fauvism. Chagall produced some of his most well-known works during his time in Paris, although he would soon leave the city and return to Russia.

In 1914, Chagall moved back to Russia, where he supported the revolution and was given a position as Director of the Free Academy of Art. After a few tumultuous years in Russia, he eventually returned to France, where he settled until the outbreak of World War II. As a Jew, Chagall was forced into exile and fled Paris for the United States. He stayed there through the duration of the war, returning to France in 1947.

Marc Chagall was an extremely versatile artist who worked in oil paintings, watercolors, gouache and even lithographs. He was also very talented and successful with ceramics and stained glass. DJT Fine Art offers some of the best Marc Chagall limited editions.
